Gabrielle Lynn McLemore (Cowrie Queen), originally from Newark, N.J., is a self-taught artist who has been creating original “ART WITH WORDS” Drawings since 1999 & is an Associate Professor of Biology at Morgan State University in Baltimore, M.D.
“ART WITH WORDS” ⎯the art of making art out of words⎯ DRAWINGS are rendered in pencil & detailed with permanent markers & are inspired by a deep love of the descendants of the African diaspora. From a distance, the viewer will see that each one-of-a-kind, Afro-centric drawing consists of an intricate, black & white geometric design. However, upon closer inspection, the eye of the viewer will discern that each design is composed of words meticulously fit into shapes of the map of Africa, which are arranged into “beautiful” hair, a crown, a head wrap, a hat, eyebrows, a beard, sideburns, earrings, or a collar. My brainchild, “ART WITH WORDS,” frees me to be me, unapologetically.
My purpose is to create drawings that perpetuate my message of Black LOVE (Loyalty to The Supreme, Self & Society; Orderliness of Soul, Mind & Body; Virtue, having Moral Excellence & Honor; Empathy, having Compassion for Others). I put a piece of my soul into every drawing. I cannot imagine my life without the ability to create “ART WITH WORDS.”
